Competencies of Graduate Social Work Students in China

In this study, we evaluated the competencies of graduate social work students in China and examined factors that impacted the competencies based on learning theory. Findings indicated that the Chinese students rated significantly lower on all core competencies than their counterparts in the United States. Knowledge and skills learned in class, field placement, and social context all have effects on competencies. Among them, how students think about individual development and the social work profession has the most significant effects on the competencies. These findings carry implications for social work education in the Chinese context. Rapid development of social work education in China requires the measurement and evaluation of students’ core competencies.
